Lotion: What's the secret?

Let’s talk about lotions! As much as I love a rich body butter in the cold, dry winter months, in the spring and summer my skin craves something nourishing but lighter.

It’s taken me a number of months to formulate our new hand and body lotion. I wanted it to be super hydrating, packed with skin-loving nutrients without leaving a heavy feeling. Of course, creamy shea butter had to be included – it’s my favourite butter to work with. I also added vitamin-rich apricot and sunflower oils because both are great for all skin types. Aloe vera juice, cucumber extract, vitamin B5 (panthenol), vitamin B3 (niacinamide), and colloidal oatmeal all contribute to the hydrating power of this lotion, but the ingredient that sets this formula apart from others that I’ve worked on is: hyaluronic acid.

We hear a lot about hyaluronic acid, but did you know that it occurs naturally in our bodies? It can be found in our eyes to keep them moist and our joints to keep them lubricated, but the majority of our body’s natural hyaluronic acid is found in our skin. It is said that hyaluronic acid has the capacity to hold up to 1000 times its weight in water – that’s a lot of moisture retention! Like most things, our natural hyaluronic acid decreases as we age. So adding it to our skin care regime is an effective way to boost the skin’s moisture.

Hyaluronic acid is available in different molecular sizes and weights. Essentially, a low molecular weight hyaluronic acid has the ability to penetrate into the skin allowing it to “plump” the skin. It’s what we typically find in anti-aging facial creams and serums.

Our hand and body lotion is formulated with a high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, which means it does not penetrate the skin. Instead it sits on top of the skin, creating a protective barrier that draws moisture from the air to the skin to hydrate it. The hyaluronic acid we use in our formulations (Sodium Hyaluronate) is made through a biofermentation process of 100% natural and non-GMO resources.

So what does this mean for you, and why is our hand and body lotion a good addition to your skin care regimen? Well, as you’ve read here, our lotion is SUPER hydrating because it doesn’t just maintain your skin’s moisture barrier, it also protects it while pulling additional moisture from the air to keep your skin hydrated. Neat, huh?

We have created two amazing hand and body lotions, an Unscented option created with Lavender and Chamomile infusions, and a Black Currant Vanilla scent. We hope you enjoy them!
