Let’s talk… Lips!

Let’s talk about our lips.

The skin on our lips is very different from the skin on the rest of our body. For starters, the skin on our face is comprised of up to 16 cellular layers, while our lips only have 3-5 cellular layers. There is no room for sweat glands within those 3-5 layers, so our lips don’t produce the protective layer of sweat and sebum that the rest of our skin produces. For this reason, the lips dry out and become chapped much more quickly than the rest of our skin.

The solution to this conundrum? Lip Balm!

A lip balm provides an occlusive (ie. protective) layer on our lips that locks in moisture and provides protection from both cold and heat.

Our lip balms are formulated with the following skin loving ingredients:

Cocoa butter – readily absorbs into the skin, it moisturizes skin that’s been exposed to the elements;

Meadowfoam seed oil – high in vitamin E, it penetrates quickly into the skin to soothe and protect;

Apricot Kernel oil – a medium penetrating oil that softens;

Castor oil – a slow penetrating oil that adds a touch of shine;

Beeswax – one of the most common ingredients in a lip balm to provide that occlusive, moisture trapping barrier. Since beeswax can be a little “draggy” I combined it with…

Candelilla wax – a harder wax derived from the leaves of the small candelilla shrub. It has a higher melting point and it aids in producing a smooth occlusive layer on the skin.
